Research,
monitoring and assessment
Goal: To fill information gaps and facilitate longer-term projects
related to fish populations and their habitats or basin hydrology
for which background information is presently limited.
Objectives: This program area is designed to supplement the
existing environmental knowledge base, to ensure technical information
availability to local communities (i.e. through development
of an information registry, possibly in cooperation with the
CBT), and to monitor physical, chemical and biological trends
in local watersheds for future management purposes.
Activities: The research program area will consist of several
components that include fisheries and aquatic research, fish
and fish habitat inventory, fish and fish habitat assessment,
and watershed monitoring. Certain components such as inventory
and monitoring could be achieved in concert with stewardship
opportunities in local watersheds.
Delivery Mechanism: Community-lead projects are envisioned as
the principal delivery mechanism where activities are closely
tied to CKFRP priorities. Due to the diversity of potential
activities within this program area, projects are expected to
occur over a range of time scales from short to long-term. Projects
will either be selected from existing, shelf-ready projects
or through the RFP process in a similar manner to that described
for the Habitat Restoration and Conservation program area (Section
6.2).
