Columbia Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership

Joseph Creek Restoration $23,094

Joseph Creek is a tributary of the St. Mary's River, which flows into the Kootenay River. It provides water for the City of Cranbrook, and for much of its length is an urban stream through Cranbrook. It formerly provided abundant spawning, incubation and juvenile rearing habitat for the valuable St. Mary's River cutthroat trout population. Habitat values have been reduced by water withdrawals, pollution, channelization, inadequate culverts and other urban development impacts. This project will:

1. Determine annual hydrograph and document baseflow levels relative to present water use.
2. Provide baseline population assessment of juvenile species.
3. Provide a GIS database of habitat impacts downstream of Idlewilde Reservoir to the Joseph Creek confluence.
4. Prepare a restoration plan within the designated impact area-of-influence for eventual habitat rehabilitation based on habitat limitations identified in the GPS survey.
5. Prepare a report that summarizes results and provides budgetary requirements for instream rehabilitation.
6. Provide future recommendations for linkages with public awareness and community stewardship activities.
