Joseph Creek
Awareness and Environmental Project $7,163
Joseph Creek has
historical significance as a westslope cutthroat trout spawning
tributary to the St.Mary's River. In recent time, Joseph Creek
has come under increasing and consistent pressure of urban growth
and rural residential development. Its value and future as a
fisheries tributary is connected to implementation realistic
recommendations of current technical studies ongoing on the
stream. It will also be dependent on the general public having
that information in their hands when choices are to be made
on its fate.
The timing of the project fits with recent and ongoing technical
data and inventory studies on Joseph Creek. The opportunity
to mesh technical work with an education and awareness campaign,
will allow the use of current knowledge from the science community.
Transferring this knowledge to the community will allow more
informed choices to be made regarding the role Joseph Creek
will play in the community's future. This awareness program
has a short and long-term agenda. The short-term (several years)
goal is to realize an enhanced and sustained fisheries value
in Joseph Creek. The long-term goal is to use and market this
model of education awareness to address urban stream issues
in a variety of urban or residential/rural settings.
