Slocan Valley
Environmental Project $22,408
The "Slocan
Valley Environment Project" is intended to begin a dialogue
about the state of the fisheries and other natural resources
in the valley, and to explore ways to promote their health.
The project will provide information to people who want to learn
more about the Slocan River fish population and other environmental
issues.
Phase 1 of the process will involve a series of small initiatives
that serve to provide information about environmental issues
to the community. This will also include public meetings to
encourage dialogue. If interest exists, a second phase will
focus on specific activities. Activities such as stream keepers,
adopt-a stream or wetland, property owners workshops, mapping
of wetlands, caring for hydrologically sensitive areas, interpretive
summer programs, school presentations, and possible habitat
reclamation projects may be explored.
Project goals for Phase 1 include:
1. To present relevant historical and current information on
the state of the Slocan River Watershed, its health, and the
condition of fisheries, to as wide an audience as possible with
respect to literacy levels and language barriers.
2. To encourage dialogue and community-wide participation in
learning and acting on behalf of the Slocan River and its tributaries.
3. To invite all community members to become involved in the
planning and delivery process of future environmental projects
through a series of public meetings.
