Earth Matters
- Hendryx St. Community Green Space $6,854
The Hendryx St. Community
Greenspace was created by Earth Matters youth participants and
many community volunteers in 1998 to provide a model "Forest
Garden" for community members to enjoy and learn from.
A forest Garden is a garden which mimics a natural forest ecosystem
while at the same time producing food, medicine, fiber and fuel.
Additionally, a main goal of forest gardening is to create habitat
for animals and insects, thereby increasing biodiversity. The
site further seeks to protect and promote local biodiversity
by the inclusion of a wide range of native plants. The Hendryx
St. Community Greenspace is an effective educational site due
to its high visibility, located on Nelson's downtown main street,
"Baker Street". It provides the community with an
excellent model of urban food production, urban biodiversity
and ecological gardening witch enhances the land base.
Specific activities from this project include:
-
Developing
a comprehensive training program for Stewardship Committee
members so that they can become ongoing stewards and educators
for the site.
-
Involving
community members in the hands-on stewardship of the site,
as well as community education activities such as site tours
and workshops (Special children's workshops will be offered
through local schools and daycares).
-
Producing
educational materials about the site for the public to learn
from.
-
Producing
a Stewardship Manual for the site which will in turn serve
as a stewardship model for other communities.
