HABITAT RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION PROJECTS

Salmo River Restoration and Protection Project $59,500

This proposed project covers protective and restorative instream works on the Salmo River, approximately eight kilometres south of Salmo. The proposal is put forward by the Salmo River Protection Committee. The committee consists of landowners along the main stem of the Salmo River above, adjacent and below the sites included in the proposal, bordering approximately an eight kilometer stretch of the river.

This project will assist in the protection of fish habitat downstream of the project area from deposition of potentially toxic tailing wastes and increased sedimentation through erosion of stream banks and the tailing pile. The project will enhance stream habitat for rainbow trout and blue-listed bull trout as well as other native fish species and riparian wildlife.

Utilizing both a professional engineer and a registered professional biologist, this project combines the use of 18 rock groins incorporating root wads; bank shaping and bank stabilization to provide the restoration of lost fish habitat and the protection of the stream from sedimentation.
