Slocan River
Habitat and Population Assessment $12,530
The purpose of this
proposed project is to:
1. Complete a rainbow trout population assessment at five representative
index sites and provide three years of pre-treatment data prior
to experimental manipulation;
2. Expand on a summer water temperature study on behalf of the
Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (CBFWCP)
to provide basin-wide temperature characteristics and complete
population assessments in July and August 2000 to demonstrate
if high seasonal temperatures affect their summer distribution;
and
3. Conduct a public meeting to convey the results of the rainbow
trout population assessment and temperature study to Slocan
valley residents, discuss the implications of present habitat
limitations and seek public and private landowner support for
experimental manipulations with large woody debris at selected
sites in the mid to lowe reaches.
The project adopts an ecosystem-based approach to stream management
and provides opportunities for increased community awareness,
public education, stewardship and strategic planning.
