Columbia Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership

Joseph Creek Restoration - Year 2 $26,441

Joseph Creek is a formerly-productive tributary of the St. Mary River (which is in turn a Kootenay River tributary.) It flows through the City of Cranbrook and (along with Gold Creek) provides the water supply for the city.

This project will:

1. Conduct an instream flow needs study to document spatial limitations to fish production (i.e., determine fish habitat needs and required stream discharge to sustain optimum fish habitat; completion of year 1 task);
2. Continue with ongoing temperature and flow monitoring to document physical characteristics of the stream ecosystem and identify temporal limitations to fish production (i.e., timing of flow releases and maximum temperature effects on aquatic biota);
3. Sediment monitoring at selected storm sewer sites within the City of Cranbrook to estimate sediment input from urban areas/activities. The sediment study will be conducted over the fall of 2000 and extend into the spring of 2001 and focus on sediment inputs related to run-off events associated with late fall rain storms and late winter snow melt.
