Columbia Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership

Assessment of Habitat Restoration Opportunities for Gerrard Rainbow Trout $26,800

The objectives of this two-year project fall under the stated FsRBC and CKFRP goal and objective(s) of protecting, conserving and restoring fish and fish habitat. In addition, this project will ultimately fill in some information gaps on Gerrard rainbow trout life history and provide key indicators for long-term trend monitoring in the watershed. In this regard this project also falls under the second objective of FsRBC and CKFRP to provide the opportunity of research, monitoring and assessment of fish and fish habitat. It is envisioned that this project will set the stage for a series of CKFRP projects in the Lardeau valley over the
next decade. Specific objectives of this proposal include:

1. Investigate field sites potentially suitable for re-establishment of old side channels and or off-channel rearing habitat development.
2. Evaluate potential benefits of side and rearing channel development using criteria outlined in Watershed Restoration Program (WRP) Technical Circular No. 9 (Slaney and Zaldokas 1997), Johnston and Slaney (1996 MS) and available literature on the Lardeau River.
3. Develop an overall plan for conservation and restoration of Gerrard rainbow trout habitat if any project(s) is deemed feasible.
