FISHERIES
AND STREAM STEWARDSHIP PROJECTS
Environmentally
responsible recreation on our shorelines and waterways $17,000
Beach and water vacations
on our lakes and rivers are a popular reason for travel into
or within the Columbia Basin, second only to recreation on our
mountains. The vast majority of our travelers expect that the
environment is well taken of. While most are largely satisfied,
at least a third believe that more needs to be done to look
after the regions natural environment.
In the spring of 1999, TASK conducted a region wide consultation
involving 300 participants from across the Columbia Basin. Water
based recreation was identified as a significant opportunity
for future tourism growth. Many also identified a stronger stewardship
ethic as essential for a viable industry.
Environmental organizations recognize the opportunity to diversify
the economies of resource dependant communities, but demand
that the impacts of recreation tourism be managed to protect
sensitive habitats. Both environmental impacts of recreation
tourism is inadequate.
Water based recreation and tourism is a growth industry in the
Columbia Basin. It offers tremendous opportunity for economic
diversification and enhanced quality of life. This project will
build awareness in the recreation community of the important
environmental values of our shorelines and waterways, and ways
to minimize the impacts of recreation activities. TASK believes
that the development of a strong stewardship ethic in the recreation
community will help prevent future degradation of these important
environments.
