Recreational
fishery conservation symposium $20,000
The tourism and recreation
sector is expanding rapidly within the East Kootenays. One key
component of the tourism and recreation sector is the recreational
fishery. Cutthroat trout fisheries on the Elk and St. Mary Rivers
have become well known to US and overseas fishermen through
TV fishing shows and sportfishing magazines. Guided fishing
effort is exploding on these and other systems in the area.
The proposed conservation symposium, to be held in the spring
of 2001 in the East Kootenays, will develop recommendations
for maintaining healthy fisheries resources; stable, economically-viable
commercial (guided) recreational sportfisheries; and accessible,
pleasurable and productive fishing opportunities for residents.
