ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND PUBLIC EDUCATION PROJECTS

Earth Matters Community Stewardship Program $20,000

This project will provide stewardship and environmental education activities which will take place within the community of Nelson, BC in the 2000 and the beginning months of 2001. Specific activities include:

• Continued coordination of the Hendryx Street Stewardship committee of dedicated community members who will receive training to steward and educate others about the Hendryx Street Community Greenspace in downtown Nelson. Focus for phase 2 will be a "train the trainers" model of education which builds the capacity of stewards to sustain and expand the program.

• Coordination of the "Fruit Tree Mapping Project", a project geared to reducing human-bear conflict in urban areas, providing community education about bear awareness, making use of unused fruit, and providing low-income community members with free fruit.

An additional component of this project will be the development of a stewardship booklet for other communities.
