Wild Voices
for Kids $10,000
The Wild Voices for Kids program is a new environmental/heritage
education program that connects students to the landscape, history
and culture of the Columbia Basin. The program is currently
being developed for the Rocky Mountain School District #6. There
has been recent interest in the program from the Nelson and
Revelstoke areas.
The program provides the following services to teachers and
students:
· Connects teachers to resource people (experts in the fields
of natural/cultural heritage of the Columbia Basin) who are
available for classroom presentations or field trips (ie. In
Spring 1999, students went on archaeological tours of the Athalmer
Salmon Beds presented by the Columbia Lake Indian Band);
-
Offers a
diverse program that includes hands-on field experience
to school children from K to 12;
-
Produces
and maintains a computer data base of resource people and
materials that includes identified curriculum links allowing
teachers to develop strong, integrated units of study;
-
Makes resource
kits and other resources available to teachers (ie. Burgess
Shale Resource Kit);
-
Offers training
opportunities for resource people to build on their presentation
skills;
-
Other services,
such as workshops for teachers are planned for the future.
