Slocan Lake Limnological assessment $4,000

The overall objective of the second year of a two-year project is to collect continue to collect sufficient data to determine the present state and productive capability of Slocan Lake relative to kokanee abundance. A number of lake and stream parameters are necessary to determine this and are listed as follows:

1. Investigate mysid abundance at two selected sites in the lake (SL1 and SL2) and compare with documented mysid abundance in Kootenay Lake and Arrow Reservoir;
2. Investigate zooplankton species abundance to determine food availability of the preferred zooplankton species for kokanee and mysid;
3. Measure phytoplankton abundance as a relative measure of lake productivity which could be the determining factor in zooplankton production and ultimately kokanee production;
4. Conduct trawl work in the fall in conjunction with the hydroacoustic surveys to confirm what species are being recorded from the hydroacoustic surveys;
5. Conduct fall kokanee spawner escapement counts in tributary steams such as Bonanza, Wilson, Carpenter and Silverton creeks to determine total escapement of spawning kokanee from Slocan Lake and compare with in-lake hydroacoustic survey kokanee abundance data;
6. Conduct primary production surveys and compare with Kootenay Lake and Arrow Reservoir.
