Lower Goat River Fish and Fish Habitat Assessment $43,168

This proposal is for a one year project to collect the necessary background data on fish and fish habitat in the lower Goat River. This data is required for the Goat River Flood Planning Study. The lower Goat River study area will extend from the confluence with the Kootenay River upstream to the hydro dam (approximately 10 km.) The study would consist of the following:

1. Conduct a seasonally stratified fish utilization study to identify and characterize preferred habitat (depth, substrate, velocity criteria) for target species (salmonids, burbot) using several sample methods;
2. Conduct a quantitative fish habitat assessment including meso-habitat mapping and characterization (depth, substrate, velocity critera) and channel assessment to evaluate fish habitat conditions, channel geometry/morphology, identify historical impacts, critical habitat, and limitations to fish production;
3. Integrate all study components into a technical report, including recommendations and their associated cost estimates for potential mitigation/restoration, and enhancement measures. The technical report would address the 5 point DFO-HEB proponent application requirements for works or undertakings that can impact fish or fish habitats;
4. Present the study for review and comment from agencies and stakeholders.
