Ethnobotanical
Walks for Students
Southeast
Kootenay School District #5 plans to begin interpretive, ethnobotanical
walks with students, teachers and Aboriginal Education Support
Workers beginning in the fall. Ethnobotany relates ethnic culture
to local botany, and the school district hopes to promote interracial
relations as well as culture and environmental awareness. Using
hands-on learning methods, students will build a knowledge and
understanding of the botany in the area and begin to understand
their connection to all living things. The district, which encompasses
schools in Cranbrook, Fernie, Jaffray, Grasmere, Sparwood and
Elkford, also hopes to improve cross cultural understanding
and enhance relevance for Aboriginal students at school. CKFRP
has granted the district $13,341 to run the program for the
2001-02 school year.
