Columbia Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership

Lardeau River Side Channel Pilot Project

The Lardeau River is an important habitat for the world famous Gerrard trout. This wild trout population spawns and rears only in this river and are strongly protected by First Nations people and Kootenay residents. This pilot project, with more than $55,000 in funding from CKFRP this year, will see the construction of a rearing channel near Tenderfoot Creek as a first step toward restoration of winter rearing habitat that is critical for Gerrard trout. This is the initial phase of an ambitious plan to increase the Gerrard rainbow trout population through restoration of their rearing habitat.
