Mark
Creek Recovery Program
Kimberley's
Mark Creek has experienced more than 100 years of negative environmental
impacts: fire, flooding, tree cover removal, acid mine drainage,
highway construction, stream channelization, urban and recreational
development, and domestic water diversion. All this combined
has degraded the water quality and fish habitat in the creek.
The goal of this program, which has received $27,000 from CKFRP
this year, is to improve public knowledge and understanding
of Mark Creek and support a fish habitat assessment. This summer,
the program plans to clean up urban waste, pull knapweed and
other noxious weeds, and perform a creel census. Other projects
will be ongoing. The program is spearheaded by the East Kootenay
Environmental Society (EKES).
