St.
Mary's River Westslope Cutthroat Trout Telemetry Study
The
St. Mary River is considered one of the best stream fisheries
in the East Kootenays and it's popularity among anglers has
increased dramatically in recent years. In order to manage,
protect and possibly enhance Westslope cutthroat trout in the
face of increasing angler effort, forestry and mining activities,
and urban development, Westslope Fisheries is using the $53,500
is funding from CKFRP to study fish distribution and habitat
use. Using radio telemetry, biologists hope to identify critical
summer, over-wintering and spawning habitats of the resident
population and recommend opportunities for protection and enhancement.
