Bighorn
in our Backyard is an ongoing education, research and restoration
project focused on the Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep herd and
its associated ecosystem in the Radium Hot Springs and Invermere
area.
The
project has four primary objectives:
1. Raise Public awareness and motivate action
towards bighorn sheep (Blue Listed) and their associated ecosystem
(grassland and open forests NDT4) in the Radium-Stoddart area
through comprehensive outreach programs.
2. Involve community residents in ecosystem
monitoring and restoration through the Bighorn Community Monitoring
Program.
3. Coordinate and conduct multi-stakeholder
ecosystem restoration of the Radium-Stoddart bighorn herd’s
historic critical winter range with primary emphasis on ecosystem
connectivity and improving the health and extent of open forest
and grassland ecosystems to benefit the red and blue listed
plant and animal species associated with these ecosystems.
4. Assess and encourage potential community-based
economic returns associated with the conservation and restoration
of ecosystems and wildlife within and adjacent to the community
of Radium Hot Springs (serves as a regional model for other
communities).
