Elk
River Telemetry Study
Westslope Fisheries
$22,260
Fernie, BC
The
project Elk River Westslope Cutthroat Trout Telemetry Project
is a continuation of a project that was started in 2000 in cooperation
with BC Hydro that will allow researchers to track movements
and identify critical habitat of Westslope Cutthroat Trout in
the Elk River. The original project was initiated by BC Hydro
to identify the impacts, if any, a dam on the Elk River at Elko
had on these important fish. Westslope cutthroat trout on the
Elk River have been under increased pressure due to an increase
in angling pressure and a loss of habitat due to development.
Forty adult cutthroat trout have been implanted with radio transmitters.
The transmitters send out a signal that allows researchers to
identify the individual fish and its location. This data is
then recorded and given to fisheries managers so that they can
better protect this important fish species for future generations.
