Restoring
Fire Maintained Ecosystems
Rocky Mountain Trench Natural
Resources Society
$10,000
East Kootenay Area
The
Trench Society will be building on the program started in 2001.
The 2001 program, the first comprehensive effort to get messages
out to the general public, laid the groundwork but communication
must be ongoing to achieve broad public understanding of and
support for restoring ecosystem productivity.
This
program continues to target the general public but also includes
a plan for reaching audiences with a stakeholder interest in
ecosystem restoration. Individuals who belong to the Society’s
member organizations want specific, detailed information on
results to date and obstacles/solutions to achieving greater
timber and forage productivity on restored sites. The program
will reach general audiences through wide distribution of newsletters
and promotion of the Society’s website. Stakeholder audiences
will be reached through audio-visual presentations featuring
both generic information and data compiled for specific interest
groups, such as ranchers, hunters and environmentalists.
The
society will evaluate the varying methods used to deliver the
program by measuring target audience response. This project
aims to raise awareness on the role of fire in these ecosystems
and reduce opposition to on-going efforts to restore this type
of habitat.
