Kokanee
Salmon Stewardship
Friends of West Kootenay Parks
Society
$5,000
Cranbrook, BC
This project will develop Columbia
Basin citizens who are willing and able to take responsibility
and make informed choices regarding ecosystems it is critical
that they have a basic knowledge of the components, interrelationships
and consequences of decisions that are made.
A practical approach to achieving
these goals is to ensure that elementary and secondary students
in the Basin are aware of the ecosystems in their local communities.
How does have a healthy Kokanee salmon population contribute
to the needs of the community? By paying attention to water
quality, logging practices, and by creating healthy environmental
conditions for the Kokanee, one is helping to crease a healthy
community as well. The spawning channel and the Kokanee Creek
itself, is an ecosystem that is right in front of these young
people – it’s hands-on, it’s in their backyards,
and it’s exemplary of human influences on a natural resource
and it’s ecosystem management.
With guidance, the children of
the Columbia Basin become stewards and informed citizens of
the future. The Kokanee Salmon Stewardship Program will combine
natural and cultural history, stewardship education, and artistic
expression to enable and empower our youth to make responsible
environmentally aware choices.
