Living
with Wildlife
Friends of Kootenay National Park
$4,500
Radium, BC
Living
with wildlife 2002 will be a weekend connecting students, parents
and teachers with researchers and experts who will share their
knowledge on wildlife research and monitoring in the Upper Columbia
River Valley and Kootenay National Park. The project will include
field trips, presentations and discussion forums.
The
September 2002 weekend will examine interconnections between
wildlife, humans and habitat, with a focus on corridor issues
and stewardship initiatives. The weekend will be modelled on
the successful Living with Wildlife Biodiversity Conference
held in Radium in 2001.
Specific
Objectives include:
• Reduce Human/Wildlife conflict and highlight regional
wildlife species.
• To connect students, the public, community planners
and decision makers with local experts to highlight wildlife
research findings and inspire stewardship initiatives.
• Showcase Radium and area as examples of a community
working with wildlife.
• Continue a fall event to generate economic benefits
for the community with an emphasis on family participation.
• Provide learning opportunities for students and public
which will strengthen the spirit of maintaining ecological integrity.
• Provide an example of Heritage Tourism – the forum
will be one of Radium’s “International Year of the
Mountains” projects.
• Provide an opportunity to showcase some of the new 2002
“Bear Aware” initiatives in the Upper Columbia Valley.
• Strengthen emotional connections to the sense of ownership
of wilderness and wildlife.
