Mountain
Caribou Workshop
Columbia Mountains Institute
$3,000
Revelstoke, BC
The Columbia Mountains Institute
of Applied Ecology is preparing a workshop on Mountain Caribou
for the fall of 2002. This project will increase the outreach
opportunities from this research oriented workshop to the general
public. With recent reports of about 50% decrease in caribou
numbers over the past decade, efforts to sustain populations
of caribou in the region will require broad support from public
and industry.
The conference will focus on the
ecology and management of Mountain Caribou. Mountain Caribou
are an ecotype of Woodland Caribou living in the snowy mountains
of southeastern British Columbia. The British Columbia government
has declared Mountain Caribou as a red-listed species. All of
the world’s remaining Mountain Caribou are found in British
Columbia, and most are in the Columbia Basin. They are an important
part of the Basin’s natural heritage.
This three day conference will
provide an opportunity for people from different disciplines
to hear about the newest information and guidelines related
to Mountain Caribou management. The expected outcome of the
conference in better management of habitats that caribou require
for their continued existence, and better management of human
activities that affect the caribou.
