Salmo
Telemetry Study
Baxter Environmental
$15,000
Salmo, BC
This
is the second year of a project to identify spawning, feeding
and over-wintering areas of rainbow trout in the Salmo River
watershed through use of radio telemetry. Radio telemetry has
been utilized as a technique in previous studies on rainbow
trout in the Kootenay Region to address management and habitat
issues. The data derived from this project will document possible
critical habitats for conservation, and identify whether habitat
compensation options should be focused on the mainstem Salmo
River or tributaries.
The
radio tags will be used in conjunction with snorkel surveys
to derive a population estimate with precise confidence limits
for the second year. This will be done by estimating the sightability
of fish during the surveys to allow an estimate of the actual
number of fish that are being seen during the swims.
