Slocan
Lake Limnological Assessment Yr. 3
Ministry of Land, Water and Air
Protection
$5,000
Nelson, BC
An
assessment of Slocan Lake has been undertaken to develop a better
understanding of water quality (e.g., nutrients), algal, zooplankton
(in particular mysid shrimp) and fish productivity. In 2001,
mysid shrimp numbers declined, possibly related to low spring
run-off – which resulted in lower inputs of water and
nutrients. Other zooplankton species (i.e., cladocerans) increased
in biomass during the same period. By extending the assessment
for a third year, scientists hope to improve their understanding
of interactions between nutrient levels and zooplankton abundance.
This information may be useful in fine-tuning fertilization
projects on near-by Kootenay and Arrow lakes to help create
conditions to benefit native zooplankton species rather than
the introduced mysid shrimp. CKFRP have provided funding from
Columbia Basin Trust to assist in data collection and interpretation
and provide a public outreach component for this project.
