Creek Recovery Program

This
project is coordinating the recovery effort (eg. Work with Teck
Cominco and the City of Kimberley to restore and protect watercourse),
continue to deliver education programs, measure water quality,
and assist with riparian planting and weir construction.
Project
Objectives for 2002-2003 include:
1. To enhance and aesthetic , tourism and recreational
value of Mark Creek while restoring riparian habitat for indigenous
plant and animal species by removing noxious weeds and replanting
5000 plants (native species).
2. To restore aquatic habitat in Mark Creek
through the placement of weirs to recreate pool and riffle habitat
in the reach behind McKim Middle School in conjunction with
school renovations.
3. To continue to coordinate and provide support
for the Mark Creek Advisory Committee, composed of stakeholder
groups in Mark Creek restoration, to formulate a long term Mark
Creek Recovery Plan.
4. To collect data to determine recommended
minimum flow levels required to maintain the urban Mark Creek
aquatic ecosystem productivity and diversity.
5. To continue to work with the City of Kimberley
and to advocate for the implementation of changes in the city
operations, which will contribute to Mark Creek ecosystem health.
6. To continue to work with Teck Cominco providing
input into reclamation work being undertaken in Mark Creek’s
riparian zone and into water quality improvements.
7. To provide support to Kimberley teachers
in utilizing the local Mark Creek ecosystem to meet their grade’s
Prescribed Learning Outcomes and to enhance environmental education
in Kimberley school for future years.
8. To teach riparian replanting techniques
and coordinate planting experience for grade 12 students considering
an environment-related career.
9. To provide work experience and summer employment
in urban stream restoration for a local post secondary science
student.
10. To improve Mark Creek water quality by
raising the awareness of residents and small businesses of the
potential sources and means of minimizing non-point source pollution.
11. To encourage the development of a stewardship
ethic towards Mark Creek to insure the continuing efforts towards
sustainable ecosystem health.
