The purpose of the project is to:
1.) Restore degraded fish habitat to approximately 1km of the lower Goat River;
2.) Restore channel sediment conveyance to approximately 1km of the lower Goat River.

Both have been damaged due to flood control measures, hydro-electric development, highway development and other urbanization and industry in the lower Goat River (Creston, B.C.). Historic forest harvest in the upper watershed may have also contributed to current hydrological and habitat trends. The Goat River fishery was and still is a very important part of the Ktunaxa Nation’s culture. The Goat River is perhaps the most important spawning tributary for endangered Kootenay River burbot and white sturgeon. The Goat River once produced spawning runs of kokanee in excess of 60,000 fish. In recent years studies have identified less than 20 fish in the upper sections of the lower Goat River.The works are also being proposed to protect an avulsion from occurring that may result in the loss or damage to the sewage treatment plant operated by the Town of Creston. Prescriptions will be based on Bisset, J.E. and R.S. Cope, 2001. Level 2 Fish Habitat Assessment Procedure and restoration Prescriptions for the Lower Goat River, Creston, B.C. Report prepared for the Columbia Kootneay Fisheries Renewal Partnership, Cranbrook, B.C. Prepared by Westslope Fisheries Ltd., Cranbrook B.C.
