Creek Environmental Assessment Project $12,600
Mount Baker Secondary School
This project is a multi-year, multi-faceted
environmental awareness project that focuses specifically on
Joseph Creek in Cranbrook. Through involvement of students in
many different aspects of this project the goals include the
following: the delivery of accurate scientific information about
urban streams to the general public; the empowerment of youth
with skills and knowledge; the long term changing behaviour
through initial training and mentoring opportunities; the sharing
of environmental concerns through a variety of media; the partnering
of scientists, educators and youth.
The project includes tangible results such as educational signage
along Joseph Creek, pamphlets, posters, videotapes, published
websites and field days where students mentor other students
“on-site”. Through these processes literally hundreds
of students gain exposure to good science increased exposure
to the complexities of environmental issues. The general public
gains a greater awareness of these same issues and complexities.
