Columbia Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership

Environmental Literacy Project (Greenhouse) $5,000
Lindsay Park Elementary School

As part of a school-wide multi-component environmental literacy initiative (please see additional info), the Lindsay Park PAC is requesting funds to build a school-based greenhouse. The greenhouse would be used and maintained by staff, students and parents to create a student run business growing indigenous plants for the Mark Creek Recovery Project.

The student run business enterprise would be coached by staff from Community Futures based in Cranbrook. All students from Lindsay Park School would be involved with the project via their classroom teacher; the school based environmental club and parent volunteers. Although the project is school-based, it will have an enormous impact on the entire community regarding conservation and education/awareness issues. Students will not only participate in a micro-enterprise start-up, but will experience a direct link to the BC Ministry of Education’s IRPs. Some of the IRPs that the students will link via this project are: K-1, describe the variety and characteristics of plants, collaborate with others in the care of plants, and determine requirements of healthy plants. Grade 2-3, demonstrate a knowledge of how plants take in water, nutrients, light / understand plant life cycles/ describe structures that enable different plants to survive in different environments. Grade 4/5 ID living resources within a local environment, relate the structure and behaviour of local plants to their survival in local environments/ relate growth to a variety of conditions.

This school-based environmental program will provide a quality education on natural systems and will help to strengthen a new generation of leaders responding to the challenge of sustainability. The greenhouse will help the students develop the ability to see the relationship and connection among things and apply these insights in how they think and act.
