Mark
Creek Recovery Program $15,000
East Kootenay Environmental Society
The
project promotes environmental stewardship of the Mark Creek
ecosystem by working with the community of Kimberley to restore
and conserve aquatic and riparian habitat and to raise awareness
of the importance of healthy aquatic/riparian ecosystems. A
committee composed of representatives of municipal government,
business, industry and community groups will complete the Mark
Creek Recovery Plan and submit it to their respective organizations
for endorsement. A focus of the plan is the restoration of Westslope
cutthroat trout (WCT), a provincially blue listed species, habitat
in lower Mark Creek.
With the recent closure of the Sullivan Mine, Kimberley is in
transition from a mining economy to a tourism / lifestyle based
economy. The community is excited by the potential to restore
Kimberley's environment to that of a healthy ecosystem and realize
that this restoration is essential to the survival of our community.
