Salmo
River Rainbow Trout Radio Telemetry & Population Assessment
$12,500
Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society
The
Salmo River is the only small stream fishery in the Nelson area
that currently provides angling opportunities. In 2001 and 2002
we have been a partner on a radio telemetry and population assessment
project to determine the population size and critical habitats
for rainbow trout in the Salmo River watershed. This data has
enabled effective management and conservation of this small
population. As the majority of the 40 radio tags that have been
deployed are still functioning, it is imperative that a second
year of tracking during the spawning period occur, and that
a third year of population estimates is conducted to allow regulation
changes to be monitored. The project has the support of MWLAP,
CBFWCP, BC Hydro and several community groups as they feel the
project is needed to monitor this important stream fishery.
Partnered funding is also available from CBFWCP and through
project efficiencies with BC Hydro.
