Community Assessment of Slocan River Ecosystem $4,865
Slocan River Streamkeepers

The Slocan River Streamkeepers would like to measure key indicators for fisheries and aquatic conditions on the Slocan River. Our primary interests are fish, fisheries habitat, water temperature and drinking water quality. No long term studies have been done on the river and we are interested in establishing a baseline to observe changes and long term trends.

This project received funding to purchase water temperature data loggers and a Hach water quality test kit. Laboratory costs and benthic invertebrate identification costs are also included. This project received funds for professional honoraria and volunteer time to review findings and write a document that will be available on a website.

A key component of the project is the involvement of high school students from local high schools and local volunteers who will keep a written log of all activities. Students will report and involve their classmates in reviewing data.

The information we collect will be presented to the Slocan Community through kitchen table meetings, and will be available in a written report. Findings will be used to plan future restorative/enhancement activities on the river.
