St.
Mary Westslope Cutthroat Trout Telemetry $18,000
St. Mary Fly Fishers
This
project outlines the methods and costs of the final year of
data collection for a radio telemetry study designed to assist
in determining the status and life history characteristics of
St Mary River Westslope Cutthroat trout. The program aims to
collect baseline data on an indigenous species for which background
information is presently limited and seeks to identify critical
summer, over-wintering, and spawning habitats of the resident
population in order to recommend opportunities for protection
and enhancement. The program began in late 2001 with the implantation
of 20 transmitters into lower river fish and was continued in
2002 to include 20 fish from upper river habitats. Considerable
resources have been invested during the last 18 months to capture
and implant 40 transmitters throughout the drainage. The program
now requires financial support to collect the data from the
implanted transmitters, which have an operational lifespan of
over two years.
