Get Bear Smart! Kimberley - $3,500

The Get Bear Smart! Kimberley Program is a long-term education and awareness program that strives to reduce the number of “problem” bears that are created and killed in this area of the Columbia Basin. In 1999, 32 bears were killed in Kimberley, prior to the program’s inception. The program recognizes that the root cause of conflicts is poor management of bear attractants, and uses education to inform all members of the community about bear biology and ecology, with emphasis on the effective management of non-natural bear attractants. By reducing non-natural food attractants food conditioning of bears will also be reduced, increasing public safety and decreasing property damage.
