Columbia Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership

Columbia Basin Indigenous Fish Stewardship - $10,000

Conservation of indigenous, or native fishes was identified as the number one priority for the Columbia-Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership (CKFRP) by community members involved in the partnership development process (documented in: An implementation strategy for Fisheries Renewal Investments in the Kootenay Region, 1999). In 2001, CKFRP initiated a status review of fishes in the Canadian Columbia Basin (excluding the Kettle and Okanagan drainages). The review includes general life history information, as well as the status and threats to each species.

The Columbia Basin Indigenous Fish Stewardship Project will develop, produce and distribute an attractive and informative summary of the information for non-technical audiences. Information will be posted on the CKFRP website, a Powerpoint presentation developed and delivered to community groups and fish trading cards prepared for a youth oriented component. CKFRP’s goal is to raise awareness of the unique fish communities of the Columbia Basin, in particular indigenous species, and their life history and habitat requirements and encourage positive human behaviours. This project addresses a gap, as conservation and naturalist groups have expressed interest in learning more about local fish species.
