Joseph
Creek Environmental Education and Awareness Program - $14,500
This
project is a multi-year, multi-faceted environmental awareness
project that focuses specifically on Joseph Creek in Cranbrook.
Through active involvement by students in the many different
aspects of this project, the goals include the following: the
delivery of accurate scientific information about Proper Functioning
Conditions of streams to the general public; the empowerment
of youth with skills and knowledge and the feeling that they
can have a positive impact in the community; the long-term changing
of behaviors through initial training, mentoring and awareness;
the sharing of environmental concerns through a variety of media;
and the partnering of scientists, educators, and youth.
This project is heightening community awareness about both the
quantity and quality of the water flow in an urban creek that
serves also as the source of drinking water for the city.
The project includes tangible results such as educational signage
along Joseph Creek, an interactive and current Website, public
service videos, and Field Days where students mentor other students
“on-site”. Through these activities, literally hundreds
of students gain exposure to valid scientific principles and
the complexities of environmental issues. The general public
also gains a greater awareness of these same issues and complexities.
