Columbia Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership

Slocan River Community Assessment - $5,655

Last year, the Slocan River Streamkeepers began measuring key indicators for fish and aquatic conditions on the Slocan River. Their primary interests are fish, aquatic habitat, water temperature and water quality. In year 2004, the intent is to continue monitoring with help from local school students and volunteers. The parameters will be: spawning rainbow trout, benthic invertebrates, substrate analysis, water quality and water temperature.
An important component of the long-term restoration plan is a habitat inventory and riparian features map. Information from the inventory will be invaluable to the Community, Landowners and Streamkeepers as partners in river conservation.

The first will be to present field inventory data collection methods to students enrolled in the Mt Sentinel Forestry Program. The second project will also be “on the ground” and will involve coordinating a tree-planting workshop on 2 to 3 parcels of waterfront land. The project will be done in partnership with local Boy Scouts who will receive their Fish and Wildlife badge. As in 2003, a key component of the projects will be the involvement of students, volunteers and landowners. Articles detailing our activities will be sent to local newspapers and posted on their website.
