Lower
Columbia River Sturgeon Creel Survey and Angler Education -
$19,970
This
is a research (information-generating) and education project
designed to: (i) assess the impact of incidental hooking of
white sturgeon in the recreational fishery on this endangered
species; (ii) determine voluntary measures that could reduce
the impact of incidental hooking (e.g. avoidance of particular
areas, seasons, fishing techniques); and (iii) educate anglers
about the presence of white sturgeon and what to do if they
hook one.
The
project will provide information to community members about
how to adjust their activities to avoid harming an endangered
species, and thereby support a wide range of efforts to avoid
extinction and recover the population to a healthy status. It
is necessary to reduce one known (but possibly significant)
impact on the survival of an endangered species.
