Upper
Columbia White Sturgeon Stewardship - $9,500
The Upper Columbia White Sturgeon
Stewardship Project will support outreach efforts to promote
a conservation ethic and implementation of the Recovery Plan
for this population. White Sturgeon in the Upper Columbia River
are considered “red listed”, or endangered, in British
Columbia and have been recommended by COSEWIC to be included
on the endangered species list within Canada. A Recovery Plan
has been prepared that outlines means for restoring a self sustaining
sturgeon population through natural reproduction.
This
stewardship project focuses on reducing the impacts of anglers
on white sturgeon, increasing public awareness of their critical
status in the Upper Columbia River (the upper Columbia refers
to the Columbia River upstream of Grand Coulee Dam, this project
will be limited to the Canadian portion) and initiating a dialogue
with residents, in particular First Nations, of the benefits
and risks associated with hatchery supplementation upstream
of Mica Dam to provide a “failsafe” population.
All these components are recommendations from the Recovery Plan,
which is available on the Initiative’s website: www.uppercolumbiastugeon.org.
