Wetlandskeepers
- $7,000
Wetlandkeepers is a program for individuals and community groups
interested in stewarding a wetland. Today many private citizens
play a key role in conservation initiatives both as advocates
and as volunteer workers. Stewards in Fernie, Golden/Invermere
and Salmo have expressed interest in receiving training to inventory
wetlands in their community in order to conserve them. Wetlandkeepers
training course fees are approximately $200 per person, a cost
out of the reach of most community stewards. Through CBT funding
support to subsidize the cost of Wetlandkeepers, community stewards
throughout the Columbia Basin can gain skills to monitor their
wetlands.
The Wetlandkeepers philosophy is “wetland conservation
through education” and all data collected through the
delivery of a Wetlandkeepers course is collated into a field
study site report, often used to begin establishing baseline
data for that wetland and establishing monitoring, restoration
and education programs to conserve it.
