Community
- Based Outdoor Water Efficiency Compaign - $10,000
The Columbia Valley Botanical Garden
(CVBG) aims to reduce water consumption through demonstrated
water efficient gardening practices and an active education
and outreach campaign for outdoor water reduction in the community
of Invermere through the growing months of 2005.
The Columbia Valley and its communities
have been coming to terms with the need for water conservation
in the region. Droughts in the region and increasing population
have reiterated the need for a water strategy. COWEC reflects
this expressed regional and local need.
The District of Invermere (DoI)
sends out educational material every year to encourage gardeners
in the community to optimize outdoor water use, for example
through alternate day watering restrictions. It is estimated
that outdoor water use is responsible for the largest single
source of domestic consumption in the valley during the summer
months.
In addition, the garden feels the
need to conserve the plant legacy of the region and innovate
and demonstrate xeriscaping techniques to create norms of water
efficient gardening technique in a region where water conservation
is paramount.
