Columbia Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership

Goat River Fish Habitat Restoration - $19,430

The Goat River was once the most important spawning and rearing tributary for Kokanee salmon in the Kootenay Lake south arm. It was also important to rainbow trout and endangered Kootenay River Burbot and White Sturgeon. Today, due to settlement activities, improper flood control and erosion control projects and hydro dams on the Kootenay River the Goat River is now a ‘desert’ devoid of a healthy fish population. The GRRA wishes to install a set of three Large Woody Debris structures in a high priority site of 80 meters in length recommended for habitat restoration. The structures will be installed by an experienced fish habitat restoration crew and assisted by the GRRA members. Kokanee and White Sturgeon are no longer found in the Goat River. Kokanee spawning runs historically reached 90,000 fish per year. Burbot, once numbering in the thousands now number less than 20. These fish were once sustenance for First Nations peoples and were an important part of the ecosystem
