Hawkins Creek Fish Habitat Restoration - $20,000

Hawkins Creek historically supported Blue Listed (BC Conservation Data Center, 2004) Westslope Cutthroat Trout and Bull trout. Over 100 years of land use without regard for aquatic habitat have impacted fish habitat in the Hawkins Creek watershed. Bull trout are no longer found in the watershed and Westslope Cutthroat trout habitat has been reduced. Dewatering and elevated temperatures due to lack of stable and suitable habitat are impacting our fishery. Our project serves to restore a high priority reach within Hawkins Creek based on a 2004 fish habitat assessment (Radridge, 2004). We wish to work with industry and agencies to increase habitat in Reach 8 of Hawkins Creek as part of a stewardship and restoration plan currently underway. Our project will include creating pool habitat, overhead cover, spawning gravel deposition and over winter habitat through the placement of large woody debris structures such as those used by the BC Watershed Restoration Program and Rosgen stream restoration methodology.
