Columbia Kootenay Fisheries Renewal Partnership

Mark Creek Recovery Program - $20,000

The aim of the project is to work with the community of Kimberley to conserve and restore ecological functioning of the lower Mark Creek ecosystem and to increase community members’ environmental awareness of the importance of our water resources. Restoring ecological functioning to the lower Mark Creek ecosystem will not only be of significant environmental benefit, it will also enhance the aesthetic, recreational, tourism and educational values of the creek. This project is necessary as Mark Creek, which forms an important part of the current landscape and the past history of our community, has been severely degraded as a result of 100 years of mining operations and the concurrent development of Kimberley. Our community has been excited to witness the return of aquatic life to Mark Creek, as a result of water quality improvements due to Teck Cominco’s recent reclamation activities, and there is now a strong community will to restore the urban portion of the creek. The education component of the project targets both school classes and the community as a whole and will benefit the community by providing environmental educational opportunities which teachers & parents have expressed strong support for.
