Assessment of the Slocan River - Phase 3 - $6,975
The
Slocan River Streamkeepers have measured key indicators for
fish and aquatic conditions on the Slocan River for two years.
Spawning fish, benthic invertebrates, aquatic habitat, water
quality and temperature continue to be studied.
The
work is done with help from local school students and their
participation has encouraged us to develop an integrated “hands
on” program. In year 2005 –06, we would like to
expand our educational outreach from three to five schools.
This
year, Streamkeepers will work with Columbia Power Corporation
(CPC) to implement their Riparian Restoration Program. Selkirk
College and local high school students will help us with work
“on the ground” and help to develop project monitoring
protocol.
Regarding fish assessments (spawning and enumeration), the results
from the snorkel survey in 2004 show
A need to investigate new sites for spawning fish. We seek professional
help in identifying new reference sites for spawning fish. Regarding
enumeration, G.G. Oliver has established five reference sites.
We would like professionals to carry out yearly fish surveys
at the Winlaw and Lemon sites. Volunteer lay people will gain
training and help perform snorkel surveys at the remaining three
survey sites.
As
our monitoring and survey activities continue, many groups will
come to learn and rely on our data. Hence, the importance of
training and upgrading members skills and knowledge. We look
forward to learning new skills related to habitat evaluation
and benthic larvae identification through attendance at the
Pacific Streamkeepers Federation Workshop in May, 2005.
As
in previous years, we will share our findings with the public
through newspaper articles, email newsletters, and postings
on our new website which is being created at slocanriverstreamkeepers.org
