HAWKINS
CREEK - RAILBED REMOVAL
Hawkins
Creek Stewardship Committee - (Yahk, BC)
$10,000.00
In
the early 20th century, a railway system ws built up Hawkins
Creek and some of its tributaries to transport lumber to the
sawmill in Yahk. A remnant of the old railbed is confining a
section of the channel at the upper end of Hawkins Creek Reach
8, resulting in degradation, bank erosion and channel entrenchment
for approximately 250-500 meters, and a 2005 Hydrogeomorphic
Assessment recommends removing portions of the railbed (Green,
2005). A plan for removing portions of the old railbed to reduce
channel confinement and allow the stream to overflow through
an alternate channel will be developed and implemented.
