Yellowfish
Environmental Stewardship Program - $2,050
Gordon
Terrace Elementary School
Cranbrook, BC
Stewart Wilson, grade 3 teacher
at Gordon Terrace Elementary School will be continuing to foster
and develop environmental awareness and stewardship among his
students through a variety of projects during the year, which
are well established and supported by the Ministry of Education
IRP’s. What originally began as an awareness campaign
to inform students, parents and individuals living within the
Gordon Terrace School zone about keeping storm drains free from
dangerous contaminants, has evolved into ongoing education about
how students and their families can make a difference in caring
for their environment. This involves students not only learning
about the Yellow Fish program; the importance of Joseph Creek
as a source of water; the importance of the riparian zone to
the creek; the importance of Elizabeth Lake as a wetland, the
4 R’s - Reduce , Reuse and Recycle, and Respect Nature;
but also being involved in action projects as they develop attitudes
and skills in water stewardship and environmental stewardship
in general, as well as developing skills mentoring other students.
